Tapa Sardar

A historic Buddhist site with stupas.

Overview

Tapa Sardar, located near Ghazni, is one of Afghanistan’s most significant Buddhist archaeological sites. Dating back to the 3rd-7th centuries, it was an important religious and cultural center along the Silk Road. The site features monasteries, stupas, and sculptures, with the most famous discovery being a colossal reclining Buddha, similar to the destroyed Bamiyan Buddhas. The blend of Gandhara and Gupta-style art found at Tapa Sardar indicates Afghanistan's central role in the exchange of Buddhist culture between India and Central Asia. Though many statues were damaged, ongoing excavations continue to reveal historical and religious insights into this once-thriving Buddhist settlement.
