Nuristan
A scenic and culturally rich region in eastern Afghanistan.
Overview
Nuristan is one of Afghanistan’s most mystical and culturally distinct regions, located in the eastern part of the country. Formerly known as Kafiristan before its inhabitants converted to Islam in the late 19th century, Nuristan retains a rich heritage, unique language, and ancient traditions. The province is known for its lush green valleys, steep mountains, and wooden houses, resembling the landscapes of northern Pakistan and Kashmir. Unlike many other parts of Afghanistan, Nuristan’s forests are densely covered with pine and cedar trees, making it an ideal spot for trekking and nature lovers. The people of Nuristan have preserved their distinct customs, folklore, and crafts, making a visit to this region an immersive cultural experience.
