Salang Pass

A high-altitude pass connecting north and south Afghanistan.

Overview

The Salang Pass is a vital mountain passage in Afghanistan, linking Kabul to the northern provinces through the Hindu Kush mountain range. Sitting at an elevation of 3,878 meters (12,723 feet), the pass is a key transportation route that allows access between the north and south of the country. A significant feature of this pass is the Salang Tunnel, a Soviet-engineered tunnel constructed in the 1960s, which reduces travel time and provides year-round connectivity. Despite harsh winters with heavy snowfall, the pass remains a crucial trade and travel route. Visitors traveling through Salang Pass can witness awe-inspiring mountain landscapes, steep cliffs, and winding roads, making it one of the most scenic and thrilling drives in Afghanistan.
